Aromatherapist Ranks Top 5 Best Essential Oils
As a certified aromatherapist, essential oils are a big part of my job and daily life, so I want to debunk a common misconception about them, which is that they are all made equal, because they’re NOT.
Some are made with fillers, a different species of plant than what’s labeled, watered down, and many other quality concerns. So I decided to test many of the popular brands to determine which ranked highest based on purity, quality, and price point.
Here are the top 5 essential oils.

REVIVE Essential Oils earned the #1 spot and is my favorite essential oil brand by far. In terms of quality, Revive oils are 100% pure therapeutic grade with no fillers or fragrances, and every batch is independently tested via GC/MS (by a PhD chemist who has been testing essential oils since 1996 – he used to work with doTerra and YoungLiving!) These reports are publicly available on the Revive website, so you can verify the purity and potency for yourself.
Revive’s oils are so high quality that I even ingest their oils by putting them in my tea or soups. Testing confirms each batch matches its labeled species with no dilution or filler oils mixed in. And you cannot beat the price! Since they aren’t a multi-level-marketing company (where friends earn financial rewards by referring products to others), their oils are priced accurately with no upcharge.
They have many dupes for your favorites at YoungLiving and doTerra for half the price and the same high quality. Check out all their 5 star reviews here.
2. doTerra

I was a former doTerra customer for years, but ultimately grew tired of navigating the sales pitches and how expensive it is. In terms of quality, doTerra essential oils are natural and high quality — my only complaint is that you have to enter a lot number from a bottle you’ve already purchased to access their GC/MS testing, so you can’t verify purity before you buy.
As for price, doTerra is genuinely expensive, and not because of quality — it’s because of the MLM structure. Up to 50% of your purchase price goes toward doTerra’s network of advocates, and the company reportedly makes $300 million a year in profit. When I compare it to Revive which is also high quality but half the price, it doesn’t make sense to me to continue purchasing my oils here.
3. Young Living

If you’ve bought essential oils, you’ve likely heard of Young Living. They own their own farms and they have certain programs (“Seed to Seal,” “Lacy Act,” and “Partnership Principles,”) saying they audit their farms and run stringent testing, however since they don’t post their GC/MS I can’t actually verify their claims or oil quality, it’s a bit too secretive for me.
Though they have great oils (Thieves was my favorite), it’s not worth the price in my opinion. They have the same MLM structure as doTerra, their oils are marked up 400% to 600%.

Rocky Mountain Essential Oils used to be called Native American Nutritionals and they’re based out of Utah. In terms of quality, they have high quality oils with easily accessible GC/MS testing for every item — I love that level of transparency.
As for price, Rocky Mountain’s oils are expensive, on par with doTerra, despite not being an MLM. It’s a good reminder that a higher price tag doesn’t automatically mean higher quality.

Melaleuca offers a wide range of products, from weight loss to windex to essential oils — and instead of trying to be the best in one category, they end up being just okay across many. Their essential oils are sold under the brand Pure Essential Oils. In terms of quality, Melaleuca’s oils are good, but they don’t share GC/MS reports on their website, so there’s no way to independently verify purity.
As for price, Melaleuca requires you to be a member to purchase, so each month you are forced to pay a minimum of $50 and buy certain things you may not need just to fill the quota.
And The Winner Is…
The winner is REVIVE ESSENTIAL OILS. Their oils are therapeutic grade, have absolutely no fillers or fragrances, and are 3rd party verified to be just as high quality, pure, & potent as doTerra and YL but at a fraction of the cost. And with the SECRET SALE they’re running for a limited time, the value & quality of these oils is unmatched by any other brand.

- #2 Doterra: Buy it Here
- #3 Young Living: Buy it Here
- #4 Rocky Mountain: Buy it Here
- #5 Melaleuca: Buy it Here

I’ve used doTERRA for years and love the quality. Would switching really make a difference?
healthyfitnessandliving
Quality wise there won’t be a difference, but your wallet will feel it LOL. After comparing the oils side-by-side and reviewing Revive’s testing, I realized I could get the same purity and strength without paying for the MLM markup. Even though I loved doTerra, once I realized the price discrepancies I couldn’t justify overspending to get my oils from them 🙂

Does Revive have anything similar to doTERRA’s popular blends?
healthyfitnessandliving
Yes! Revive makes alternatives for so many doTERRA and Young Living favorites, and they have a comparison chart here that makes them really easy to find. Once I replaced my old favorites with Revive’s dupes I couldn’t even tell the difference! https://www.revive-eo.com/compare-blends/

Could the cheaper price mean Revive is watering the oils down?
healthyfitnessandliving
That was my concern too, but the independent testing confirms that the oils match the labeled plant species and aren’t diluted with filler oils or water. Their prices are lower mainly because they sell directly instead of paying layers of MLM commissions, so quality wise they are equal to YL and doTerra

Do I need to become a member or place monthly orders with Revive? I already have a membership with YoungLiving and I don’t want to deal with another
healthyfitnessandliving
Not at all! There are no membership fees, monthly minimums, or autoship requirements. You can order one bottle or several whenever you need them without being pressured to meet a quota (and the shipping is always FREE!)

I’m a Melaleuca member and I’m so tired of buying random things just to meet the monthly minimum.
healthyfitnessandliving
That was one of the biggest reasons I preferred Revive! There’s no monthly commitment, so you only buy the oils you actually want when you need them. It feels much simpler and I’ve saved so much money.
